Or men and women seeing different movies.
In the same you're going to struggle to make a guy friendly rom com, you're going to struggle to make a girl friendly super hero film or any kind of actioner.
I think the ones that straddle the divide are usually more entertaining.
For example Firefly, Alien, Zero Dark 30.
Alot of female lead actioners aren't so much female lead, as a bloke with tits and a gun.
Such as Elektra Assassin or Lara Croft.

It has morphed from it's original ideals into a wishy washy, centre ground, liberal, middle class, anything goes, past time. In days gone by, a woman like Katie Price, who shagged her way to fame and fortune, would never be considered a feminist icon - but she is now, for some weird reason.
Now that I can agree with, but in that respect it's like most protest movements.
e.g. lefties foaming at the mouth about promises made by the unelectable UKIP and ignoring Labor's atrocious record on immigration.
So there's this terrible vague sense of grumpiness about rape culture, whatever that actually is. Which ignores the stratsopheric leap from the films and comedies of the 70s.
And the unhappiness about women earning 25% less than men, when the simple explanation is the baby break or women who choose not to enter the work force (snigger).
