Don't just limit yourself to the cities. I live near Boston (Massachusetts) which is a huge comedy scene and I go to an open mic in Charlestown. But there's also a café in a small rural town that I like to perform at because the open mic is for poets and story tellers.
After poem after poem of "My boyfriend abused me", and "The Boston Bombings have changed us" I take the mic and it really lightens up the mood of the room because I'm the only one there performing any real comedy.
I'm new to the game too, so in my mind, making a bunch of people laugh in a small town might encourage them to come and see me at a larger venue.
On a side note, good luck in your new surroundings. It's hard enough moving from one state to another and I'm only a four hour drive from where I grew up. I can't imagine what a huge life change moving to a different country can be.
