I read the news today oh boy! Page 1,504

Because we have developed a shorthand on 'tragedy' and there is a hierarchy involved -

White girl child, like Madeline McCann is top of the list and elderly brown foreigns are bottom of the list.

If a black teenage working class girl gets murdered, then it barely makes the news but if some rich, posh, white teenage girl kills herself because of cyber bulling / anorexia / a suicide pact, it's a national tragedy.

I don't make the rules, but it's why some people feel sorry for the Geldofs but don't give two shits about the hundreds of dead 'Chinkys' on Flight MH370.

Because this is a news thread and they were in the news.

Who is we? There is a difference between the words opinion and estimation by the way.

Watch out, he's gone full retard.

;)

Yes, the constant mentions of her gender, age and penchant for pooping sprogs out of her front bottom has led me to believe there is a hierarchy of tragedy for some strange reason.

As for my going full retard, what can I say, I couldn't have done it without you lot.

Hehe, sorry I just really like using that phrase.

(It's just when you bring out the word 'chinkys' or 'towelheads' or something, I know you've gone fully into the dark place.)

RCP is right there is a definite hierarchy of sentimentality about death Charlie broker writes eloquently about it

I'm sad she's dead

I'm glad her career is over

RCP though turtn it down you plays the truth on a harmonica jammed up your arsehole

'We' would be the media that shapes our opinions and teaches us to put different values on human life.

Estimation can also mean - a judgement of the worth or character of someone or something. It may differ from an opinion, but not in any real sense in this context. Of course, we can divert the argument with pedantry, as that appears to be a popular tactic on the BCG.

I put 'Chinkys' in inverted commas for a reason. I was showing that our compassion for foreigns, no matter how young or laden with children, is not as strong as for our home grown 'honkeys'.

Well you take your lessons from the media. Good luck with that . Or is it the stupid people you mean? We both know estimation in the context you used it means you were giving your judgement. Thank you

It's difficult to tell with the stupid, I could be wishing Rest In Peace to some rich dead girl on a comedy forum. I could speak only in reverent tones because that is the expected narrative. I could feel sorry for this woman's kids but not Colonel Gadaffi's children. It's a funny old world.

What has rich got to do with anything?

Does "the stupid" encompass everyone who disagrees with you?

You're very inquisitive this evening Marc. ;)

Not only do rich people get far more press attention and column inches when they snuff it unexpectedly, the vast majority of premature death that occurs in the UK is amongst the poor.

Just another factor along with being young, white and female.

Not at all. However, we are all influenced by the media, not realising we are is kind of stupid.

People in the media get attention from the media. Go figure. Rich people get treated better than poor. Somebody should write a book about this! Night john boy :)

I doubt anyone would disagree with you.

Why does it follow that someone expressing an "RIP" about Peaches' death must be unaware of the impact the media has on our lives?

I am aware of all the issues you raised.

It doesn't stop her death being tragic. I don't say that because it is the "expected narrative", I say that because that is what I think.

No doubt you did find it tragic. Mickey Rooney also died today, but he was 93 years old and people thought he died years ago - now that is kind of tragic.

Do you think I'll be safe under the dining room table?

It really does appear that the death of Peaches Geldof was a tragedy, Lionel Blair, Girls Aloud and Rizzle Kicks have all expressed their sadness on Twitter.

But it's not just showbiz luminaries like Dermot O'Leary who are taking to Twitter to discuss the dead woman -

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/04/08/peaches-geldof-metro-anger_n_5108898.html?utm_hp_ref=uk

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Jeremy Vine have both Tweeted about the Metro Newspaper's 'Together Again' headline featuring Peaches and her mother Paula Yates.

Shame on you Metro for getting the tone slightly wrong in this morbidly ghoulish and very public grief fest for the daughter of a famous person.

Next you'll be telling me that after going on Twitter and writing 'it's a tragedy', that these same mourners will immediately splutter out 'Was it drugs? Was it? Maybe she topped herself like her Mum. Have you seen the names of her kids? That whole family is screwed up' without skipping a beat.
