Today life imitated art. In my latest effort at being a successful playwright (decision still pending)the opening act contains a scene where a mother sends her son to school to be patched up after being cut by a knife because she can't be bothered to take him to the doctors/A&E.
Low and behold one of my lovelies comes in this morning having fallen out of a tree on Sunday with a suspected broken wrist. We've patched him up of course and tried to contact mum. He has told us that mum had said to him that she'd be in town all day. Read 'not answering my mobile' for that. Dad is at home but told him he has no money for bus fair (£1.60)
I suspect we will also end up taking him to the hospital ourselves. Great parenting!

That's both horrific and abusive.
There must be some sort of consequence, fractures are incredibly painful and can potentially not heal.
They used to put people in stocks for that, but they strike me as the people who'd view that as a chance to get a free kebab.

The problem is as far as social services are concerned, in the league table of neglect and abuse, they'd be ranked as caring! For one the mother told the kid where she'd be, for another it was an accident and not caused by dad torturing the boy by snapping his wrist in a vice and then posting it YouTube.
This is the thing is it all gets spread so thin, that no one notices your sticking a clean knife in an empty jar and spreading nothing on dry toast.
