Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle - Series 3 Page 11

Recorded this bitch for tomorrow.

Not up to his usual standard tonight, I thought.

I liked his little song.

"Total bastards like Huw Edwards" - funniest line of the series so far from Chris Morris.

I liked the bit where he said "oligarch".

I was surprised a line of this didn't find its way into the first half:

You don't see rabbits being walked down the street
And you don't see many cats on leads
Dogs pet dogs dogs rapacious wet dogs
Owner of dogs slow-witted dog owner
Owner of rabid dog saving fare for tunnel
Euro-dream of civil, civil liberation for dogs
Society secret society inevitable nightmare
Of drift dog pet dogs street bullshit
Dog shit baby bit ass-lick dog mirror
Dead tiger shot and checked out by dog
Big tea-chest-f**ker dog
Black collar sends East German refugee back switch and crap pathetic
Of earth-like lousy dog role model for infidel doghouse continent
Mutt citadel dog-eye mirror hypnotic school slaver and learn
Rot from dog on grass and over nervous delicate dog
Detracts light from indiscrepant non-dog-lover
Dog pet dog come home to ya
Come home we'll talk shit to ya
Dog the pet-owner-owner blistered hanging there death dog
Plato of the human example and copier dogmaster pet mourner
Dog is life

Makes me pine for the days of the Amphetamine Communist. Bizarrely (or perhaps not so) I find his bigoted and xenophobic material much funnier then the 'big picture' stuff.

His digs at Birmingham and Coronation Street probably got the biggest laughs from me this week. I'm also finding large portions of his act to be incredibly dated:

'I can't believe Boris Johnson is mayor...' - he's been Mayor for nearly 6 years, was re-elected and even has a bicycle named after him. This would have been funny back in 2008...but now it's...wait for it...two thousand and late.

But by far, the funniest part of the show was when he castigated the audience on the Dog / Poor grooming elaborate and expensive costume gag - 'Don't applaud because you remembered something!' We need more of that anger and satirical bile to slip back into his show.

With any luck, his wife will divorce him and deny access to the kids, creating such a cataclysmically depressing situation that we get our favourite fat, balding, over educated, politically redundant, stand up back in comedy action.

I've enjoyed this series so far.

I have to say though, it's my least favourite of the three.

Given that the theme for the show was "London", I can't see how anybody could say funny stuff about London for half an hour without mentioning Boris Johnson.

Given that the theme for the show was "London", I can't see how anybody could say funny stuff about London for half an hour without mentioning Boris Johnson.

But that's just it, he didn't really say anything about Boris, probably because he would have fallen into the Lefty contradiction trap of 'Boris is a buffoon...and an evil genius' or 'He's an embarrassing joke...who's brought a lot of good publicity and investment to London'.

Even using Dick Whittington was a poor example of an allegory, according to the story, Dick was taken in by a friendly oligarch who paid him to get rid of rats.

Worst of all was his tenuous link between the poor being forced out of London and politics moving to the centre ground as a result. I think he got those two points the wrong way round.

I liked it. The highlights are always him poking fun at his own champagne socialism and attacking the audience (live, at home or both).

David Bussell once saw Stewart Lee on a bus and sent me a picture of him.

He brought up Boris Johnson with reference to the double standards people have about foxes and dogs in London. I think it's reasonable to say that you can't believe he's mayor if you are already talking about him.

Otherwise we would just get a series of bullet points.

Sweet!

I once saw Stewart Lee in a shop whilst I was holding a jug, and said something stupid which he laughed at.
I did not take a photo or even Tweet about it. I was very strong.

Is that why he never shook your hand?
