Your avatar is mighty fine.

What is your argument exactly? That having people on TV who don't meet YOUR standards of attractiveness has lowered the entire countires self esteem? That we should be worried because having a variety of different actors on our TV screens means people in Spain think our women aren't as attractive as theirs? I mean, sheesh.
Quote: paulted @ 21st March 2014, 10:33 AM GMTAmerican TV series that always seem to be full of adolescent angst and "beautiful people"(even the adventure and sci-fi shows).
Quote: Gordon Bennett @ 21st March 2014, 1:27 PM GMTIf the character is supposed to be feeble according to the script it makes no sense for it to be played by a topmodel.
paulted's original complaint was that people who are meant to be athletic and skilled in martial arts are played by attractive people. You lot are throwing out Cracker and Baldrick as counter points. Good job.
There's a reason Robbie Coltrane wasn't chosen to play James Bond over Daniel Craig and it's got nothing to do with being Scottish.
Quote: Renegade Carpark @ 21st March 2014, 12:37 PM GMTunfair stereotype throughout the world that British women are total mingers.
Zooo

I don't remember him writing anything about "martial arts". He mentioned "90210" among others...and you know, there really are chubby high school girls in America. Not only Top Models, played by the producer's daughters.

A quick browse through the 'Who do you fancy thread?' will confirm that assumption. My standards of physical attractiveness are only unique in Britain, go to any forum in the US, Brazil, Russia, etc. and tell them that you think Miranda Hart is gorgeous and you'll be laughed at by everyone, even the women.
As for the actor fitting the role argument, the low self esteem has spread to our writers, so the characters they create are ugly, plain, unsuccessful, dullards - it's a vicious circle of unambitious mediocrity.

And didn't Tori Spelling get it in the neck for being the odd one out in the attractiveness scale of that show.

So, creating an unrealistic, careless world of cuties such as in Friends is what you're calling "ambitious" or "above average"? Don't get me wrong, a show like Friends is absolutely ok, but the beauty of the actors doesn't raise it above Fawlty Towers per se.

Good point.

As opposed to a depressing world of uggos, then yes I would call it ambitious. Would Friends have been a worldwide success if it was full of fat, old people?
Youth and sex sells, the producers of BBC's Sherlock realised that, portraying Holmes, Watson and Moriarty at least 20 years younger and in some cases, several stones lighter, then previously seen.
And let's not even get into Doctor Who.

Probably not, but (huge) commercial success shouldn't be the only ambition in the life of a writer...but that's just my opinion

Absolutely true. But I still prefer the old Mission Impossible series over the action shite Hollywood made out of it for example. (Again: my opinion)

The original cast weren't exactly hideous.
Yeah, but you must admit the Golden Girls reboot was ridiculous! Maria Bello was completely miscast as Tyra Banks' mother.
How shallow some people are.... gloss, yoof, and looks do not equal success. Just take a look at most successful cop and comedy shows. Interesting and innovative always wins the day.
Seinfeld
Fawlty Towers
Breaking Bad
Cracker
Dads Army
Columbo
The Sopranos
The Sweeney
Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy
Steptoe and Son
and the entire Simpsons clan are no lookers too!

the ones in The Sun haven't got any clothes on

Oh for the love of God! You really think writers work within that mindset??? Bonkers RC
Take two Ribenas and four Hail Mary's.

This is probably one of the weirdest arguments I've ever had on here. Someone is angry that the actors on American television dramas are too attractive. That the sight of their pretty faces and fit bodies is a cause of rage and consternation.
Furthermore, these television shows should be more like British productions and feature less attractive people, seemingly because it will make some viewers feel less threatened and insecure.
When I point out that UK television has gone the other way, that we feature far too many unattractive actors, people respond with anger. Not because I'm wrong, but because I'm intolerant - I should force myself to find ugly people beautiful. Which in itself is probably the second weirdest argument I've had on here.
