That bloke 'feat' seems to get about a bit these days.
Ultimate Pop Group Page 7
Has anyone mentioned the Pet Shop Boys? They've sold zillions of records in their heydays and yet their lyrics were mostly clever and satirycal. They were commercially successful, intellectually stimulating and funny at the same time. I^m not a hardcore fan, just someone who appreciates their craft*.
They are/were the pefect pop band...them or Blur.
*...and I've met them backstage, but that's a different story.
Did anyone mentioned Blondie?? Also Take That, Wham, Culture Club, Bananarama, Bee Gee's, Abba, Communards / Erasure and Deacon Blue.

Yay!
Quote: Chappers @ 10th March 2014, 11:46 PM GMTAs it's been a few years thought I'd bump this thread.
After all there have been dozens of brilliant musicians in the last 6 years haven't there.
Take That excepted of course.
I missed this first time round, so glad it was bumped.
The answer is The Beatles followed by Abba as the ultimate pop groups - Take That didn't even break America and their total album sales pale in comparison to both Fab Fours.
I did mostly only ever mention Take That back in the day to get Chappers back up. (I do think they've made some very good songs but I would never suggest they were the best pop band ever.) Mind you I don't think many of the other bands suggested are particularly 'ultimate' either.
And I've never liked Abba's music much. (Soz.)

I'm all for winding up Chappers.
Abba aren't my cup of tea either, but I think looking at it objectively, they can never be described as anything but 'pop' and their worldwide success has been phenomenal. Madonna and Michael Jackson have both sold more albums, but they're not a group, so I left them out.
Madness are still going strong. Their last album wasn't much cop, but the previous one (see below) was a masterpiece.
As said before you can't seriously include Take That because it's only giiirrrllls that like them. I really don't know any blokes who have any time for them.
I know a few, they have to be the type with a bit of backbone, who don't care what people think of them. No one you'd know, Chappers.
You Me At Six or Maroon 5

Come on. They are not world shatteringly brilliant are they? You may like them but that's not the point. There's loads of bands I like that I would never include here.
The Beatles are untouchable.
ABBA made some great pop.
Queen maybe.
Madness
Blondie
Fleetwood Mac.
Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
I'm not saying I like them all but they are unquestionably universally respected.
I think I'd be most inclined to go for Queen.
The Cure is an amazing singles band. And isn't being a Pop band about releasing many great singles? I'd nominate them, although they have released great albums as well.
Did the Jackson Five sell a huge amount? Presumably they did.
