Computer problem

When I tried to switch my PC on last night, I got a black screen with the message 'No signal. Going to sleep.'.

I've had this problem a couple of times in the past, but I've been able to resolve it by turning my computer on and off several times.

However, when this method didn't produce results, I tried pressing some of the buttons on the monitor itself, but this has only made things worse.

Now my monitor displays 'AGING' in small black text against a white background. After a couple of seconds the text disappears and the monitor switches itself off completely.

Then after a few more seconds, it turns itself back on and resumes this behaviour in a seemingly endless loop.

My monitor's a Fujitsu Siemens scaleoview x15-2. I've emailed Fujitsu, but they only gave me the number of an expensive helpline.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this problem?

Check your monitor is attached properly to the computer. Try a different monitor, to rule out either computer or monitor. Change display card if necessary.

The cable which plugs into the monitor is definitely in securely. I even took it out and put it back in to make sure.

Unfortunately, I don't own any any additional monitors.

Can you plug the monitor into a laptop?

I've just managed to sort the problem. It turned out the trick was leaving the computer completely unplugged for about an hour before trying again.

Well done, sounds like you managed to alter the plug and play settings somehow.

The 'no signal' message is literally what it says - the monitor is not getting a signal from the computer so is going to sleep. You can resolve this by putting a usb device into the computer - try unplugging and re-plugging in the keyboard - that will wake the computer up.

I can't help you with the 'aging' bit.

Everything seems to be running smoothly again, and there doesn't appear to be any data loss.

Thanks anyway for your suggestions.

It's probably sitting there plotting it's next campaign to drive you insane. Once you accept that all computers are evil bastards, you'll find it easier to cope - maybe.

Can you plug the monitor into a laptop?

Yes, laptops usually have a VGA socket.

Is it a fairly old computer?

Your symptoms sound as if the tiny disc 3 volt battery inside is running down.
