Exactly.
He was one of the main characters in Season 1 and then he was dropped.

More or less the premise of the thread...

Randall Carver is a better example in Taxi.
Was puzzled by this, but it seems in my memory I conflated the two (unmemorable) characters.
Grandad in OFAH?

The reason for Lennard Pearce's departure was his own death. So, that's not exactly a "fifth-Beatle-situation". I can imagine Pete Best being pissed off by the missed opportunity but I think Pearce couldn't care less.
Harry Enfield in Men Behaving Badly

It is. I really liked his role. I read somewhere (maybe on this site) they adjusted his character for the second series because he was considered as being too grumpy and upleasant. So they made him a bit nicer and more senile (but not less crafty). But they could have left him as he was in the first series as far as I'm concerned, his sarcasm was great, especially in Slow Bus To Chingford.
I liked both, Grandad and Albert. But it wouldn't have been catastrophe if Grandad had made it to the end.

Funnily enough I have always hated the Grandad character in OFAH.
In fact I can hardly watch the early episodes of OFAH because of the Grandad.
I remember reading once that John Sullivan said he wanted an "Albert Steptoe" type character to play Grandad. Though there were similarities in the characters I have always felt Albert Steptoe had a "warmth" about him that Grandad never had.
I think the reason for the long running success of OFAH was the arrival of Uncle Albert who was a far funnier (and far nicer) character than Grandad.
I am not convinced the show would have run as long, or been as successful, without Uncle Albert.
Strange that he had been a bank manager most of his life and I think OFAH was his first TV role.
Funny you say that. I always felt like Albert offered more obvious humour, almost like he was a character for the kids to laugh at with his catch phrases and all.
Grandad was fantastic and Pearce could really sell his lines and steal scenes with a look or a well timed line. Maybe I'm in the minority when I say that I preferred Grandad over Albert any day of the week.

Absolutely.

I think most people preferred Grandad but it wasn't really possible for him to carry on.
Quote: Tim Azure @ 24th April 2012, 3:55 PM BSTCan you name someone who left a particular sitcom before it became "popular"? They need to be in more than one episode.
Dad's Army seem to have a number of people who were only in the first series:
Caroline Dowdeswell - played Janet King, a clerk at the bank.
E V H Emmett - played the voice at the beginning.
Martin Wyldeck - played Major Regan, who was a bit of an enemy for troop.
Private Cheeseman (who replaced Walker for one series) was sort of a fifth Beatle although he came and went while it was at the height of its popularity.

I seem to remember Tony had a mate in Series 2 who had a market stall next to his, can't remember his name. He was never mentioned again when the BBC took over in Series 3.
Phoebe's dad in Goodnight Sweetheart was gone by Series 2.
Chris Morris as Denholm Renholm was killed off at the beginning of Series 2 of The IT Crowd (although he reappeared later).
The old lady in Count Arthur Strong, killed off at the end of Series 1.
Liz Smith was killed off in The Vicar Of Dibley.
