What are you eating? Page 669

I tried cooking a roux once, but it turned out sludgy and I got angry.

It's an art! Cook it too much and it doesn't dissolve, cook it too little and it doesn't thicken! But when it works, it's the most glorious thing ever, in the world of roux making at least!

What the bloody hell is roux?

Is it French gravy or something ?

It's a mix of butter and flour that you add to liquid to thicken it.

(Liquid Nitrogen, if you're Heston Blumenthal.)

Sacrilegious as this may sound, if you get those instant porridge pouches.

The pouches are heat resistant so you can pour water from the kettle straight in.

Bish bosh job done, porridge not quite as good but less mess.

Or you can make bircher style porridge by soaking it in juice or milk over night and if need be microwaving it.

Nothing wrong with the instant ones, a Godsend for bringing in the car to eat on the way to work between traffic lights.

And there will be more exerpts from Sootyj's reworking of Goldilocks and the Three Bears tomorrow

Travel Lodge do a surprisingly good porridge

Porridge always looks and smells nice

So occasionally I have a bowl

Tastes like warm sick

Yum!

Porridge is great, cheap as anything too. I make it quite milky and have honey or a sprinkle of sugar, comfort food at it's best.

Same here; I added a few chopped grapes the other day - worked a treat.

I stir in frozen fruit
