When people show off

Also annoyed by the number of people using the bible as an historical document on Radio 2 today, trying to prove the ethnicity of a person for whose existence there is zero historical evidence. I don't care if you think Jesus is purple with green stripes, but stop starting your arguments with the statement that there is definitely an historical figure called Jesus, because there isn't.

Lofthouse is going to need to edit that signature.

When people show off

All some people care about is getting attention.

This programme on the front page of radio iPlayer:

The Shared Experience

1. I Saw a Ghost

Five people who have seen a ghost share their experience with Fi Glover.

Should read "Five people who either mistakenly think they've seen a ghost or who are just plain lying for attention chat shit to Fi Glover."

I have no patience for people's idiotic supernatural bullshit today.

You know this always puzzles me. I'm not a Christian. I think the story of Jesus is just yet another middle Eastern mythology. But is there any way anybody has ever established that this human being existed? what about the census they were allegedly heading to ? Do these records exist? I'm being lazy here - instead of researching for myself, I'm wondering if anybody else knows.

The census is complete fiction, never happened. The only non-biblical 'evidence' for Jesus' existence comes from sources written at least a century later, and the gospels were written decades after his supposed death, they all contradict one another and were heavily edited a few centuries later to form the canonical bible. Pretty much everything in the bible that you can check with secular sources never happened. No Jewish slaves in Egypt either, or walking around the desert, and that's according to an Israeli university. It's all just the local incarnation of the Indo-European mythos.

I don't want to sound smug, but you do wonder why intelligent people believe this stuff. I can only imagine it's because either they need to or they haven't investigated it.

But if it wasn't irrational or impossible, what would the point be in believing in it.

You'd just be accepting fact.

God like George Micheal wants your faith.

Though not your sex apparently.

I did like the irony that some Christian groups are saying that atheists were forgetting the true meaning of Christmas, when we all know it pre-dates Christianity.

I think it's brainwashing. Seriously, if you were told this stuff your whole life you'd find it hard to shake it. And religion breeds disingenuous thinking in to people because it teaches people excuses for all the obviously fake stuff. I think the vast majority of people who identify as Christian but don't go to church etc. probably have never thought about it properly or they would realise it's all nonsense. I wish they would get around to thinking about it, because it's bloody annoying that we all have to play along out of 'niceness'.

It's not so much that it's irrational , just that it's been totally invented, probably by a human being no different from any of us. A bit like one of us writing a short story and telling the world that they have to believe it's true.

Alleged birthday of Mithras, though I've yet to check that out.

He is a one woman man.

Well what you're discussing is a narrow branch of most monotheistic faiths, biblical literalism.

It kinda ignores either Biblical exegesis, or those who use the structures of faith as a meditative tool.

Atheists need to get over themselves, we live in a secular country, you won.

The few proper Christians left are mostly extraordinarily nice people who just want be allowed to believe what they believe without being sneered at, or having their beliefs mocked.

If you want to antagonise some proper scary religious nutters, try the Moslems.

The thing is that the people who just use the framework of religion to be nice, clever, well-rounded people are enabling and encouraging the people who use religion to misinform children, oppress other people, mutilate other people, instil fear and guilt in other people, hold back scientific progress, etc. etc.

We don't live in a secular country, we just live in a more secular country than we used to.

Who are you referring to, in this country.

Perhaps you would care to tell us how you are currently being oppressed by religion? I cannot say that I find being a non-believer any inconvenience.
