Lovely Script Edit & Development Service Page 2

:D

When I did some freelance stuff (not editing, mind) I was advised to provide a low-cost introductory offer. That way, having high rates without a reputation won't put people off, but people won't assume you're crap because you're cheap.

Ah, good idea; that was the thought with these prices anyway, but making that clear by stating as such can't hurt. Thanks.

Sounds very interesting. Nothing ready to show you at present but might well have something shortly.

Cool. If you know any other writers, do spread the word! :)

Good to have that service available from fellow BCG'ers, well done Matt (and Dan!) and good luck with it.

Ta. Yes, wasn't quite sure what to do price-wise, but thought it can't hurt to try it low then hoik it up a bit at a later date. But yeah, there is the slight worry that people might think it's a rubbish service 'cos it's too low and so avoid...

Good trick: Always call you initial pricing "Special introductory opening offer price" or similar.

Leaves you free to increase it to standard price shortly after.

<later>
Oh somebody already said that... >_<

Good luck with this, Matthew.

My one was 3 goats, 2 slaves and your ugliest child.

For that I would debug upto 10 commandments.

I next increased mine during the Dark Ages, when I virus proofed Magna Carta for several barrels of mead.

You is old Bill innit.

Good luck, Matthew. May you flourish. And also maintain your sanity as you realise you're charging far too little for the mental stress involved in grappling with the unfixable, unreadable and unproduceable.

I always figure work how much you want to charge per hour and work around that.

I'd be surprised if you could give a script a good dusting down, in just an hour.

Heh, thanks; general consensus seems to be not to go too low, so I'll be nudging it up a notch, see how that works.

Surely all that mental stress was worth it for three series of Coming Of Age?

;)

I had little to do with Coming of Age, Tim, apart from execing the pilot. Other people deserve the credit. However, I'm proud to have helped a new and very young writer get a show made, which ran to three series - a real achievement. But keep grinding that axe, why don't you? I hope you're very well, and more important still writing and finding success with it, given your undoubted talent.

Apologies, Micheal. Force of habit etc.

Hope you're doing really well. How's the writing going?

I'm good and in development both at the BBC and NBC-Uni. Had a near miss with a Baby Cow project... *mutters*... Exciting times (mostly). I'm still 'reaching for that rainbow'... not in the gay-social-acceptance kind of way though. (Saying that, I am writing a brilliantly camp sitcom all about the crazy characters at Stonewall!)

:)

Well done! I'm really pleased for you. Having written my book (shameless plug, sorry, support the BCG), and done some TV execing/consulting, I'm now concentrating on fringe theatre and have also been writing sketches for a group I'm producing here in Manchester. Having abandoned writing during my TV career, not wanting to be seen as a competitor rather than a source of neutral advice on team-written shows, I'm having a really good time. I'm lucky to have a friend who does brilliant notes and helps me turn my appalling first drafts into rather less appalling subsequent drafts, though they're probably still rubbish. I'm making up for lost time, really. The great thing about live stuff is that you can't sort it out in the edit, and every audience is completely different. My first play got a 5 star and a 1 star, which was salutary in the sense of trying to make the writing bullet-proof. And I don't have five execs offering conflicting notes. It's more exposed, but more rewarding when it works.

PS - the Stonewall ref didn't quote. I developed a show here about a lesbian bar in Canal Street, which got turned down because it was felt to be too gay/too exclusive a world. So maybe think about that.

(I maybe lied about working on a Stonewall sitcom. Sorry.)
