Nice. I'm only doing Saturday birthdays. You've got me for seven years.
Edmundo Ros : 7 December 1910 - 21 October 2011
Edmundo Ros was born in Trinidad. His mother Luisa Urquart was a teacher, thought to be descended from indigenous Caribs, and his father, William Hope-Ross, was Scottish. From 1927 to 1937 his family lived in Venezuela where he played euphonium and drums in the Military Academy Band and Symphony Orchestra.
From 1937 to 1942, Ros studied at the Royal Academy of Music, recorded with Fats Waller and formed his own rumba band. It played very regularly at the Coconut Grove club in Regent Street and in the posh Bagatelle Restaurant. At the Bagatelle, Princess Elizabeth danced in public for the first time to his music.
Ros became a Mason, a freeman of the City of London and an OBE. He often played at Buckingham Palace. But in 1975, his band's shop steward arranged venues behind his back. Ros responded with a "celebratory" dinner where he destroyed the music sheets and ended the band's existence. He died in 2011 aged 100.

Harry Chapin - 7 December 1942 - 16 July 1981
The great story teller Harry Chapin. Chapin focused on social activism, seeing hunger and poverty as an insult to America. He was a co-founder of World Hunger Year and raised 3 million dollars in the last six years of his short life. Harry wouldn't save money. He always said "money is for people" and then he gave it all away - to 17 relatives, 14 associations, 7 foundations and 82 charities. Sadly he died in a car accident in 1981 but he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1987 for his humanitarian work.

Good shout - the BBC documentary on Elektra Records from a couple of years back ended with a moving section on Harry, with Jac Holzman clearly still very affected by his loss all these years later; it also included a clip of my favourite of his songs - 'Mercenaries', which the beeb later played in full to my delight!
