Note that Per Mertesacker who is a bit of a plodder for the Gunners was brilliant. It seems the Germans play better for country than club. Unlike some players we know
They always have, those krauts. I thought much of the time it's because they don't have a greatly demanding club league like we've always had and they have the energy to step up for zare farzerland. But yes their national uniform really transforms them.
But some of England's best players were also nowhere near as good for their club, so maybe it's the way to go to be a great international? eg. Hodge, Platt, Stevens, Crouch etc. Very handy England players. Have a feeling Townsend may be one of them.
Conversely you have much better players like Rooney, Gerrard and others who play their best football for their clubs. Tis a mystery yet to be solved.
