It was also the 62nd birthday of Maggie Roche of Irish-American family group The Roches. They are known for their unusual rich harmonies, quirky lyrics and casually comedic stage performances. Here's "The Train":

And Mahalia Jackson, The Queen of Gospel, was born on 26th October. She knew Martin Luther King and was at the heart of the Civil Rights movement. Harry Belafonte described her as "the single most powerful black woman in the US" before her death aged 60 in 1972. She's also mentioned in Van Morrison's lyrics.
