When I used to be on the bus with my mum, people would always ask her "what's your daughters name?"

Kids are not really sophisticated in their understanding of gender signifiers, so they are taught that women look like one thing and men look like another thing, and so when people subvert that strict set of attributes that they have learnt it is confusing for them. If you are even remotely androgynous it's completely baffling to kids who have not been around different types of people.

That's a rollicking good song.

Definetly. None of them seem really concerned, just curious. It actually makes me giggle on the inside when it happens. I was with a friend today and had to try really hard not laugh out loud.
Quote: zooo @ October 26 2013, 1:26 PM BSTKids are so weird sometimes. I remember when my niece saw a very obviously female woman on TV who happened to have a shaved head, and she absolutely couldn't conceive of the fact that it was a woman.
(Not suggesting that you have a shaved head! Just that kids are odd.)
Not shaved, but I thought about it. I settled for short enough that I don't have to do anything to make it look neat.
I think most of us are still odd as adults, we just learn to hide it as we get older. I think it would be a really bad thing if kids started loosing their natural curiosity, would be less joy in the world I rekon.
And fewer fat women crying on buses. 'Mummy why is that lady so fat?'
Apparently I once loudly asked why a man on the bus smelled of wee. Although I have no recollection of the event I still feel guilty that I made a wee smelling man self conscious.
Hopefully it was just you from the future.

You might even BE a girl for all we know.
Or a cat.
Allo. How are we all on this fine pre-storm weekend?
