Hopefully he's now sailed to a better place, or at least one without pain.

Hi George - thanks - and yes. It's very sad.
I knew he had been seriously ill and it was unlikely he would see the end of this year. That is three missing now from the gigs with the most life - Kirsty 41, Joe 50, Phil 56. It is not what we would have imagined.
He wrote "Thousands Are Sailing". One of their greatest songs - and one of their most Irish. Lyrics that are poetry, showing real empathy with history and poverty, yes, folk leaning but crucially in the mainstream.
It was education set against severe political change, so effective at the time because it was huge fun. There was hope that lessons would be learned. Lessons which, for example, would prevent the need for people in their thousands using food banks. Even - and how shocking this would be - within 25 years.
There were many strings to his bow. His punkier work with Agnes Bernelle and The Radiators is good. As I am sure you will know, he produced the great "Night of a Thousand Candles" for The Men They Couldn't Hang. He worked with Elvis Costello and classical composer David Bedford on "The Captains and the Kings".
Known principally for his erudition, I think there was always an amused feeling of "what is he doing in the riotous Pogues?". At the same time it made absolute sense. None of them were daft. It was inconceivable culturally that he wouldn't have been there. And so when he was clearly enjoying being at the heart of it all, that brought a special pleasure to we the participatory audience. I am really sorry he has gone so soon.
