British Comedy Guide

What are you working on and what are your plans?

Writers, what are you all working on at the moment, and do you have plans in the wings for future projects?

I've finally had a simple-enough idea for a sitcom (most of my ideas fall down because they are too complex), so the most immediate thing I'm doing is writing that. I'm going to send that to the Development Manager at BBC North first to get some feedback, then if it's good enough I'll start looking at independent production companies.

After that, I'd really like to do a staged sketch show. I've been wanting to do one for years, but now I actually know some actors/producers/directors so I'll be writing that next and trying to get a team together for performances, with an eventual ambition of taking it to Edinburgh. Might never happen but I'll have fun trying.

What are you guys doing?

I'm working on a (aimed at Radio 4, 11:30am slot) sitcom set in a Kent seaside town in 1958.

No plans on what to do with it, though.

I've decided I should write a spec in addition to an original I'm rewriting, so I'm working on an Always Sunny idea I had a while back. The quality of the new season so far's really got my enthusiasm up. Aside from that I'm going to LA for the first time next month and my girlfriend has a mate who's on staff at Modern Family, so hopefully I'll be able to chat to some industry people and get some tips.

Still churning out one-liners and occasional comedy songs for anyone who wants to use them.

Anyone? Somebody...?

Newsrevue, Treason Show?

Had a couple of bits on Kirrin Island and Treason Show.

Newsrevue something of a barren land for me.

Try the first week every 6 weeks and turn off your filter.

Seriously there is literally nothing that's too offensive for them.

I think they did a sketch of mine where Russell Brand auditioned his cock to play Maddy McGanne in a film about her.

Have never heard of doing this. What exactly is a spec?

He means writing an episode of an established, current show. It's what a lot of comedy writers in the states do; have an original script and a spec of a current show to send out and about.

Ah ok. That sounds like a fun way to write. I'm guessing it's to do with there being writing teams in the US, where you could become a staff writer on an established show? Used to hate that idea, but I've been very impressed by a lot of stuff coming out of the US in recent years.

Yeah exactly that. It's a good way of showing that you're able to write in the voices of pre-existing characters and not just stuff that you've come up with yourself. Always Sunny seems like a fairly simple one to go with as the five main protagonists have loads of uniquely identifiable traits, plus it's such a weird, dark show that you can pretty much get away with anything in terms of plot.

I'm just writing a short scene for a sitcom pilot that's looking for writers.

I'm going to stick it in critique

Sitcom script written and now I'm sending it to every production company in the galaxy. Just wondering how I'm going to bind the hard copies. Anyone? Bulldog clip? Punch holes and string? Duct tape?

How many are you sending? You could get it bound with those plastic spirally things in a binding place. Haven't had that done since my dissertation, though; can't remember how much it costs. Presumably sending most copies electronically are you?

Most electrically but one person wanted it as a hard copy as he thinks things read funnier on paper. Will have a wander round staples tomorrow.

About 30 emails to companies. 1 person read my idea and said no, 1 asked for a hard copy, 3 said they don't want unsolicited scripts.

Split pins, use two but not four. Good luck!
