What kind of cat and dog can live in the same building?
I was thinking of labrador or retriever for dogs but am not sure about cats.
Probably around 2017.
So if there are going to be new versions, I'd like to hear about those too.
A lot of breeds can, providing they've been raised properly. Keep away from hunting breeds as they have a natural propensity to snap and can do some serious damage. The more laid back the better.
And with the cat it's entirely up the individual and there's absolutely no way of telling before hand.
Get the dog's teeth removed. 
Or a dog with a mouth smaller than a cat's head?

When we eventually get a dog we'll get one the same(ish) size as the cats so it's a fairer fight for the pecking order.

My parents had a cat that behaved like a dog. It always ran to the block of garages to meet my father when he returned home from work and then walked beside him back to the house.
It also caused arguments. They would say that each other had forgotten to close the lean-to window. It had a very heavy lever handle. One day they walked in on the cat opening it.
It was quite incredible. Must have taken a hundred thumps upwards from its paw to set it free - and it did it many times. Think I would back that kind of ingenuity against any dozy dog.
Cats is clever.
I don't mind tiny dogs, ones that cats can beat up if need be.
