I have struggled to find a decent wake up station since Sir Tel retired. Chris Evans is unbearable; at that time in the morning I am not up to the doom and gloom of Radio 4; and I can't be doing with adverts. Sean Keveney on 6 is tolerable but because of the brief to be inclusive about every fourth track makes me want to launch the radio out of the bedroom window.

Yes ditto except I don't like Wogan much either. It has to be 4 Extra, I think, around 8am-9am.

I will leave the discussion about Resonance FM, WFMU, SOAS and more for another time. :)

Tel was contractually obliged to play some dreadful stuff, but he also went out of his way to push people like Alison Krauss, Juliet Turner, Fleet Foxes and Karine Polwart. And he had a truly filthy sense of humour, which is always cheering. I do not think anyone has got away with as much on radio since Kenneth Horne.

Yes, sure. It was the money really - particularly the payment for Children in Need. I find it distancing. I realise that applies to many. Evans, for example, can't be like you or me in my head when he's loaded.

Yes I know what you mean, but I suppose you have to distance the personality Wogan created for himself from the actual person. it is like any form of art or entertainment, you cannot dismiss it because of your opinion of the creator, at least not without narrowing your horizon really rather dramatically.

Curiously while I dislike Evans as a personality, as a person I think he has done rather well to go from egotistical arsehole to grounded individual, or at least as grounded as it is possible to be while being as comfortably well off as Croesus

Yes, you are right. I managed to cut myself off from the Premiership for several years on much the same grounds but it can be self-defeating. I am trying to develop what I think psychologists call a lacuna on gross levels of pay while simultaneously making sure that I don't actually forget.

On Chris Evans, I don't take to him much as a person but I do regard him as quite good at what he does. He must be if I can say so while not liking him particularly. It helped when he refused requests by leading politicians to be seen with them just so as they could widen their appeal.

It's also the case that while I'm for improving broadcasting standards, that doesn't come with any sense of elitism. Throwaway stuff is tremendous if it is done well. The biggest enemy is blandness. I thought "The Big Breakfast" during the Evans years was a great bit of TV - original, a bit anarchic, vibrant. I liked it a lot.

The adicts - viva la revolution

Fish - A Feast of Consequences

Not a huge fan of his solo stuff, but pretty promising on a first listen.

Andre Tanker - Sayamanda

Fish...Not a huge fan of his solo stuff

Same here. I have his first album Vigil, Raingods with Zippos and the Kettle Of Fish compilation. Not even the "hits" collection is a pleasure from start to finish. There surely are some nuggets in his oeuvre but his career is very inconsistent...and disappointing in comparison to his time with Marillion.
