Bob won't need reminding that today is, of course, the 42nd birthday of the Old Grey Whistle Test. My guess is he will be playing a bit of the Eagles as Dan Felder has just turned 66. Here the top billing goes to the American jazz musician, composer and electric bass player Jaco Pastorius, a genius who sadly died at just 35 on this day in 1987. I could have included a clip of a live performance but the record says it all:
Weather Report - Birdland
Lust been listening to/watching Meat Loaf in concert in Australia. Old I know but it comes around on Sky Arts every now and then.

Listening to some Gregorian chanting. There's something dark and sad at it's heart that I can't get enough of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aoj2kGBddRA
Now listening to Into the Sun, the first album by Sean Lennon and it's actually pretty good.

They're one of my favourite "90s bands" (only second to Pearl Jam), haven't heard their new record yet though.

They are one of my favourites from the 90s too. I haven't heard the new one yet either.
The last "World Routes" is being broadcast at 10pm tonight on BBC R3. It will feature highlights from its 13 year history. Headed up by the academic but always accessible Lucy Duran, and also featuring Andy Kershaw, the programme specialised in collecting field recordings of musicians in remote parts of the globe.
I believe it has made an even bigger contribution to world music than Ewan MacColl's "Radio Ballads" programme made to folk music 50 years ago and that was huge. It's archive recordings, which are available online, are an immense contribution to ethnomusicology and will be treasured for decades to come.
"World Routes" was quite expensive to produce and it is therefore a victim of the cuts. But it was a drop in the ocean in the BBC budget and it really should have been preserved. Anyhow, one more for the road:
