I read the news today oh boy! Page 1,311

But I paid £500 for my union membership, I paid £10 to attend the disco. Part of my university experience is being able to listen to Robin Thicke at EUSA events. I'm sure the school that banned Anne Frank's diary don't search for books at the entrance to the school, but it's about reducing access.

Was it that the book was banned from being read out at Union discos or the actual school board, NOT the union, banning its teaching and discussion as part of the curriculum? You'll have to fill me in on the details because it doesn't sound the same at all.

No they aren't. If you have his music on your private iPhone, you can listen to it on SU property. It just isn't played as part of public events.

It's like me going to a club and being gutted when they refuse to play S Club 7. Sure, I'm upset, but it isn't my decision to make. Just as they can't interfere when I dance around my flat to 'Reach' for four hours on a Sunday night. (Although the council's Noise Abatement Team is a different question).

Suppose they said

"we don't play SClub 7 because it's shit"

as opposed to

"we don't play SClub 7 because, it's immoral may lead to you being racist on a reality TV show and we know whats best for you."

I think countries with real censorship issues would piss themselves laughing at us getting our knickers in a twist about a Robin f**king Thicke song.

Did Footloose teaching us nothing?

That you crush self expression at your own peril?

Perhaps the arguments are not exactly the same, but the principles are.

And a SU is a powerful institution, and above all else it's a union. A representing organising body it really isn't just a place for cheap beer once a week.

You know, Colin even looks a bit like Paddington.

Aww, he does.
Although he has slimmed down a lot recently.

Then I would take my business elsewhere. Angry

First they came for Robert Thicke and I didn't speak out because he was a twat.

Then they came for Miley Cyrus and I didn't speak out because she's got weird hair.

Then they came for Paddington Bear, because he's representative of patriarchal values.

And there was no one left to speak out for him.

And please stop trying to make me into a Robin Thicke defender!

:O :O :O

Where did you got to Uni? Even the University of Durham ("we've sent Arabella here so she can experience the real working class Northern people") didn't charge that!

Ah but supposing this was the club at the high court and it was the only one you could afford to attend and it was where all the QCs hung out.
Would you feel they were abusing their power?

This is not untrue.

I long to go to North Korea. I bet it is utterly awful and utterly fascinating.

F**k knows when I went to uni our spell checker was waiting for Samuel Johnson to finish his dictionary.

In fairness the DPRK approach to pop stars could be very well applied to Mr Thicke.

No. If QC and Judges Union had voted not to play S Club 7 (unlikely, nothing the judiciary love more than a bit of early millennium pop) then I would accept that decision and play it on my own music devices.

Today, I listened to North and South's 'I'm a man not a boy." I suspect that this doesn't get the outing it deserves in clubs up and down the country.

Actually yeah, our NUS subscription was £40 a year and our Fresher Ball was free. Seems Sooty went to the Waitrose of the education world whereas I dug through the slightly soiled smart price poly.

In my mind, I have you down as being in your early 30's.
