And secondly for fairness for all involved in criminal cases, certainly violent and/or sex crimes, I think private trials are a must and could be set up in a matter of mere years from now, ie. much sooner than for the above solution. But I mean just for the duration of it, the press can be there but can't report until the trial is completed. Delayed reporting. It happens in some cases already doesn't it, I think it should become the norm.

Isn't a lot of the damage by the press done long before cases ever come to trial?

Yes there is, I think public interest needs to be redefined and clarified.

Any journalist or editor who claims public interest when inappropriate.

Should be put in stocks outside their papers officers for the day and pelted with excrement.

Tony Abbott appears to be a nutter:

Was he interviewed while sitting on the back shelf of a saloon car?

:)

This is the man he defeated.

There now appears to be a strong link between modern leadership and insanity.

Laughing out loud

It wouldn't have been so bad if he had adapted a stony stare stance but a nodding dog??

"You're not saying anything, Tony."

Brilliant.

And I thought Cameron was bad, at least he seems a bit more human.

I rather like the top rated comment:

"The guy's having a stroke, show some respect" :D

Australia, I know your options weren't great, but what have you done? :(

How did he win?

The background is worth knowing. Rudd was PM before being ousted by Julia Gilliard. He then ousted her before fighting the election and losing. This is a truly shocking video. Have a stiff drink before viewing.

Can confirm that the Tony Abbott clip was real, the interviewer is a political reporter for one of the TV stations here. I'd forgotten about it until now. Wikipedia tells me Abbott was born in England. Can you lot take him back please?
Or if anyone fancies moving to the 50's I will trade you places. I kinda like this century.

Kevin Rudd and the Labour were nowhere near perfect either. At least he knows what century it is.

At least now it's over- we might get a break from the complete circus we have had to put up with for the least few years- At least for a month or two.

Voting isn't optional there, so they had to vote for one idiot or the other.

Tony should have called the fosters guys for advice

Under compulsory voting, do you have a "None of the Above" box or is it a case of having to spoil your ballot paper? On Rudd, the swearing is trivial. Weirdo swearing is more concerning. Sadly, both of the contenders in your election appear to be not only creepy but downright peculiar. And we have Mick Gove and Ed Balls.

I don't know....to be honest I think it is mostly older people who would have voted for him.

It isn't optional but you can go get your name marked off the roll and submit a blank form- not that I agree with that.

I would like to know the implications. Does that mean you effectively become a non-person rather than being able to express disapproval? Presumably tax records are separate? I am completely against compulsory voting unless there is a "None of the Above" box. It can't possibly be any recognisable version of freedom.

I haven't heard an argument for compulsory voting that wasn't obviously complete bollocks, it's amazing that it's an actual thing.

What would "none of the above" mean? That you don't care, or you actually want none of the listed candidates in power? Because if "none of the above" gets the most votes, does that mean there's no government?
