I'm 36...I started listening to music when I was about 7 in 1984 so the oldest "current music" I can remember is Prince's Purple Rain. And yes, Michael Jackson was still cool then. I then explored the music of the 50s,60s and 70s via movie soundtracks and music magazines.
"Purple Rain" is still one of my faves.

Ah, Lena had life very tough. She had so many opponents. It seems that her biggest sin was to have had considerable talent for musicals in a pop and rock age. And to have been a precociously gifted child from a distinctly working class background. I thought she was a pleasant if tragic adult.
According to Wiki, at 10 years, 146 days old, she is still the youngest person to have had an album in the Top 10 and she was also the youngest person to appear on the BBC's Top of the Pops. She sang with Frank Sinatra, performed with Morecambe and Wise and was in a show on Broadway too.

......Anyhow moving on, albeit with a thought about what her record on Stax might have sounded like, Julie London was certainly incredibly sexy. I'd also place "Cry Me A River" in any list of the best 100 songs of all time.
Gordon, your knowledge of music prior to your birth is mind boggling. I think Stealers Wheel only recorded two proper albums so if you can't find a compilation they won't cost a fortune.
