What A Carve Up

The relatives of Uncle Gabriel are summoned to an old country house in the middle of nowhere to hear the reading of his will. They all stay in the mansion overnight, and one by one the guests are murdered. The remaining guests must solve the mystery as to who is committing these murders before they too are killed.

It stars Sid James, Kenneth Connor and Shirley Eaton.

Does anyone like this film?

I do. Sid James: Yak Yak Yak Laughing out loud

This film got released in the USA under the guise of "No place like Homiside". It's films like this that inspire me to no ends. You have good taste in old films Mr Roper. :D

Yep. A true classic IMO.

Also the title of an excellent novel by Jonathan Coe in which the film features prominently.

Just started the novel. I also have the film but wasn't sure what order to do things. 50 pages into the book and I have decided to watch film this weekend to complement things. Can't wait.

I love this film so much. I have it on DVD and watch it a fair bit. I like the opening scene where Sid falls through the kitchen roof.

Somehow I've only just watched this today - and loved it. I'm not a fan of Carry On Screaming!, spoofing a genre I don't care for doesn't do much for me at all, but this - a pretty straight horror/mystery as the central plot, with comedy happening around it, is wonderful. Loved it. Very funny.

I think it's better than most of the Hudis scripted Carry Ons and looks more or less like one, using some of the same actors. However, Carry On Screaming is definitely one of the very best Carry Ons regardless of whether one likes the genre it's spoofing or not.

The quality of spoof was superb, and imo greatly enhanced by the choice of Sid's replacement. WACU as you say is much more a spoof whodunit with a touch of spookiness, of which there've been many such murder mystery movies made.

I've rediscovered the early Hudis films this year after seeing Blu-ray restorations - and I reckon they're utterly wonderful. A very different beast from the later lot, but I really fell in love with them for the first time, seeing them in decent quality.

is more or less one anyway being made by the same outfit

Afraid this is wrong though. There are various films of which it's true, but What A Carve Up isn't one. The cast are the only link.

No I realised after I posted it and changed it, I must have confused it for another when doing a Q for a quiz, possibly The Big Job, another undervalued film. WACU wasn't even shot in Pinewood which I thought was the reason the Carry On actors were involved. Still looks to me like it could have been from that stable.

Inspired the superb 1993 Jonathan Coe novel too.

Hudis?

No. Click through to our Guide from the top to see!

Nope, Still none the wiser.

I was comparing the film to the first six Carry Ons which were penned by Norman Hudis, no relation to Roy Hudd.
