Just A Boys Game

Who remembers this drama, a classic Play for Today episode?

No - who was in - what was it about - and when???

Frankie Miller, Gregor Fisher, Ken hutchinson- it was about a hardman called Jake McQuillan who lived in the shadow of his dying grandfather- it was made in 1979.

Daniel, it'd be a lot easier in future, in the interests of discussion, if you say something about the show that you're asking if anyone remembers. :)

It's available on DVD singly and with some other classic Peter McDougall plays in a collection:

Just a Boys Game is an absolute gem, well worth watching.

One of several plays by Peter McDougall shown by the BBC. Superb acting all round and a fabulous story although the programme is very dark and bleak. To be honest it probably is a very good portrayal of life in a tough council estate in a west of Scotland town (Greenock) at that time

I loved all of the Peter McDougall BBC dramas, Just A Boy's Game, Just Another Saturday, The Elephant's Graveyard, Where the Buffalo Roam. In age where a piece of fluff like Sherlock can be held up as a drama flagship it is easy to forget that TV could be this good. Drama with spmething to say that was accessible, amusing, though-provoking and genuinely emotionally engaging. And in Elephant's Graveyard Billy Connolly gave the performance of his career.

Nearest English equivalent of Just A Boys Game (circa 1970s) that I can think of is Boys From The Black Stuff. Both from the same gritty reality genre and the macarbe humour is similair too even though the subject matter is completely different.

All of Just A Boys Game is on YouTube albeit in a sequence of several separate clips. :|

Jake lives in the shadow of his dying grandfather, who was once the town's toughest hard man. Despite their hatred of each other, Jake's sole aim is to be as tough as the old man was. One day in Jake's life, as he drifts, drinks and fights, leads to a bleak realisation.
