Well I managed to get them on my laptop - but couldn't find a lead for my phone! Bugger! Wanted to get some ready before my flight.

Email them to your iPhone one at a time.

Forgot I'd started this one! Only took me 3 years to finally succumb.

My bit of advice to anyone buying an iPod for the first time

I recently got a second one cos my first was filled up

So I already knew what to do With the second one

Anyway when I plugged my second one into my laptop to start putting stuff on it my damn computer wouldn't recognize it

It didn't make sense and I spent hours pissing about but when I was running iTunes it couldn't find my iPod even though it was plugged in

Eventually after tearing my hair out I finally realized why - my version of iTunes was tooooooo old

Once I updated it everything started to work fine

So make sure your iTunes is the latest version

Just saying, as this really drove me mental !!

How do I find out what version of iTunes I have on my laptop?

I want to buy a cheap second-hand iPod shuffle, and need to find out which ones are compatible.

Ta!

I only want something for very occasional use - long journeys, not everyday listening.

I just finished a job writing top tips for ios6 in a witty ouvre.

I have no idea if they worked, because I had no idea what I was writing.

You can pick whatever version you want but it will always ask you to have the latest one. I think any version works with any iPod.

You might be better off spending a tenner on a no-brand mP3 player with "shuffle" feature and then spending the rest on decent headphones, rather than buying an iPod shuffle? Or just buying a decent mp3 player with a display, I'd imagine the iPod shuffle being frustrating after a while.

Oh, I completely missed that part. Never mind.

Do you mean Shuffle, or perhaps Nano?

The Shuffle, brand new, is just £40. It's the version with no screen.

Nano is the small one that does have a screen. I think they're around £120 brand new, so you might indeed be able to knock a little off by going second hand.

The Shuffle would probably be adequate. Seen one for £18 second-hand.

Still don't know what version of iTunes I've got, or how to find out?

Presumably there's an 'About' panel in it somewhere (normally under a Help menu on Windows), that'll list a version number. The Shuffle is very basic, I'd be surprised if it needed a specific version of iTunes to work - and iTunes will probably update itself all the time anyway.

Thanks, Aaron!

Discovered the Menu Bar had been set to hidden, so by changing that have finally located the Help section, and various other useful bits.

Cheers!
