How do I respond to people who Critique my work?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and have only submitted one piece of work so far and to be honest have found the feedback very helpful and a little confusing at times, however I was wondering how I respond to comments made by people who's work I don't find funny?
I don't mean this horribly and realize that everyone's opinion counts, and I think its nice to thank someone for their input, however on looking at what Critiques are submitting themselves, I find I'm trapped between "utter genius, please tell me everything you know" and "But you have posted loads of stuff on here and I've not found any of it funny!" how do I say thank you to the ones who's input is clearly important (AKA me mere mortal man listening to the gods!) and nice friendly advice from people I don't think are funny or get it, but know they are more successful at this than I'm ever likely to be?
Thanks
Tony

Just say thanks for reading
If you don't like their stuff, then there is no reason for you to take the critique on board, and no need to worry about it.

Thank you, I Get that, but some people are very insightful and I want to let them know how much I appreciate their comments, and others whilst I appreciate them taking the time to comment are not so important because we have different styles, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you have got two comments, one from Ben Elton who you have always looked up to, admired his work, and can not thank enough for his input, and one from Peter Kay who is nothing like the comedian you want to be and who you don't find that funny, how do I distinguish between the two when saying thank you as Peter Kays comments might be relevant if I was trying to replica what he does, but Ben Elton's are Gold-dust to me and I would be nothing without his Input?

Everything's up for critique, from the critique, to the critiquer, to their curtains.
So by all means shoot back, though alas it will usually sound like sour grapes.
And a cat may not know how to fly or swim, but it may know a great deal about the fish and the birds.

Tony Take it all with a large pinch of salt. Most people on this site have zero talent , skill or aptitude for writing. What these ones do have are massive over-inflated egos which are a sure sign of desperate insecurity.Your opinion about your own work counts for far more and , of course , anyone who offers you any kind of contract and money.First question you should ask of anyone on this site is - have you had anything optioned? ie. Is anyone interested, impressed or enthralled enough by something you've hacked out, to offer you money to use it.If the answer is no then figure it out for yourself.Don't let the bastards grind you down.

Can you name names Jaicee? Otherwise it sounds like quite a minefield? :)

Then why even bother putting it up for critique ? Surely your advice (Insults aside) should be to post off everything you write?
I admit there are a few on here who slam stuff because they dislike the poster, but I have had some good advice over my time on here.

I think a person should take what they can use and blank what they perceive as malicious.
And blowing your top once in a while helps I find.

I think that's very sound advice.

And look on the bright side.

Actually this advice is shit to the point of trolling.

Except Jaicee I don't actually think there is anyone who could fake being so tragically needy as your goodself.

The worst person to judge your work is yourself. If you didn't think it was good why would you write it? Of course you can make some of the critique yourself, but not all of it.

The second worst person is anyone whose going to potentially pay you. Because if they think you're shit then they will ignore you. They generally will only even give you feedback if they see potential in you.

Critique, feedback, whatever is how you hone your art. It's how you lose the rough edges, find your voice, learn the techniques. And sometimes that advice comes from people who aren't even neccasairly brilliant writers them selves. Some of the best script readers and gurus have never had a think produced.

It worked for me.

(also coming from someone with learning difficulties, do something about your f**king horrible formatting).

Dull, lengthy and overwrought.

But welcome again anyway. Enjoy the thread. :D

It's no different from talking to a group in your local pub. You value the opinions of those whose opinions you value. It just takes a little while to figure out who they are by reading what they have posted, and it looks like you are well on the way to making those judgements.

if you are lucky enough to have several critiques, just give one general 'thank you all for your comments' and then engage with those you find valuable.

Why so much self-reference Sooty?

You need to look at how people start here. Mainly pleasant.

Actually, you do though.

You and several others are generally there waiting at the school gates.

This morning for example - https://www.comedy.co.uk/forums/thread/28374/

And that from a guy who writes a sketch where the "joke" is that a dog is in the vicinity during dogging.

Gawd!

I was referring to you wasn't I?

Besides that's a stumbly most likely. Someone who pretends to have stumbled across their own or a friends work online.

They're fair game.

And my ciritisim is usually fair. But well trolling, time wasting or rudeness I tend to call a spade a spade.
