I only discovered him a couple of years ago. He can be a bit cheesy at times, and I'm sure it's fairly uncool to admit to liking him, but I like his voice, and enjoy him as a background music. I've picked up quite a few second-hand cds of his by now, and usually play something once/month, so he must have something going for him. :)

I'm a bit hazy on that one. Aware of him but don't quite recall. I'd probably like it.

This was the first Harper song I heard - on a compilation. Never seen the video till now. Extra cheese. :)

Diamonds On The Inside

Some of his other stuff is much heavier.

Good stuff! Babel video is a precursor to Goat with their ethnic masks.

As for Little Walter, by coincidence Harper recently worked with Charlie Musselwhite:

Was that selection partly sparked by the surfing in the Diamonds on the Inside video, or yet another coincidence?

John Cale writes tunes not quite like anyone else. :)

Heard something funny on the BBC's 5 Live the other night. They were doing a tribute to JJ Cale, and one of the guests admitted that he'd accidentally gone to one of his gigs, thinking he'd bought tickets for John Cale instead. But he'd enjoyed it anyway. Laughing out loud

Coincidence. I decided to listen to this track because I listened to a Beach Boys song earlier.
This is some sort of tribute to Brian Wilson. Anyway, I liked the Harper song.

I was watching a documentary on J.J. Cale on a Swiss channel yesterday. I learned that J.J. is actually called John as well. But early in his career his manager (or something) advised him to change his name to J.J. to avoid being confused with the then more famous John Cale of Velvet Underground.

I liked the two Ben Harper tracks, George. He's also improving with that collaboration. I will check out the CD. The verse in the first sounded like "I Shall Be Released". The obvious marketing of escapism in the video isn't off- putting because I identify with the concept. That's why Jack Johnson can be forgiven musically.

Gordon, you are clearly a Brian Wilson fan. When my Dad was well past 70, I thought it would be nice if we went together to a concert. He hadn't been to one in 30 years. I also had a concept. It should be something from after his teens but before mine. We saw Brian Wilson/Smile at the RFH. A great night.

I love John Cale. The arrangements are often very innovative and complex...but the songs themselves are damn catchy at the same time.

Totally agree. The BBs were ahead of their time. The top poster is spot on. "This song never sounded or "looked" as good as it does right here!" As for the Rascals, I champion bands, particularly 60s, who've been unfairly dismissed as lightweight. Some of them were real class. Many were often adept at positive themes. While those are often said to lack depth. I think they require a lot of skill so as not to be twee. Anyhow:

This Shaun Murphy is a force of nature...and a Bonnie Raitt sound-alike.
