Need holiday ideas

Hello everyone,

I need some help. My friend and I are off on holiday in September for 10 days. One problem - we have no idea where to go.
Requirements are:

- Can't be doing with a really long flight
- We are both massive geeks - love history, art, castles, ruins etc.
- Also need book and bikini time. Not bothered if that is on a beach or by a pool. But sun is essential.

Any suggestions?

Malta.

I was going to suggest a swap but Australia is a long flight away. Also we don't have much in the way of castles, history or art here.

But
I can almost guarntee sunshine and book and bikini time if Brisbane does interest you? Lots of beaches within a hour or so drive. We also have man made beach in the centre of the city if that's your thing.

Sicily? I've never been, but it looks delightful.

Tuscany. With a day trip or two to Florence.

Croatia? Incl Dubrovnik, Opatija.

Some excellent ideas.

Reds - I would LOVE to do Australia. Fancy coming to London? We could do a house swap.

Should I ever be stupid enough to need one, I would go to Florence on my honeymoon. Gorgeous place.

Will look into Malta, Sicily and Croatia. Thanks!

When in September? Used to be crucial, less so with mad weather patterns at mo, but late September (should) signals price drop but you are taking a risk in weather, certainly to Tuscany, SOFrance, Northern Spain. Done them in late sept and sun gone!

Popular September venues are Cyprus, still HOT, Canary Islands, but are still quite busy and prices don't come down that much. How about southern Spain, Andalusia has heat, culture, history, lots of castles and good food if you like paella. Proper old Spain.

For sure. I often tell people that if I had a job in London I would pack my bags and leave within a day or two. They laugh at this- not realising that I am not joking. London is my favourite place in the world.

Well the streets are paved with tramps piss :)

I think anyone who lives in city learns to avoid stepping in unkown wet patches.

Note to those considering travel to Brisbane: Avoiding unknown wet patches in Fortitude Valley is for your own good.

Really? Have you ever lived here? :D

I love London, but it took me a while to get used to. I grew up in a small city in the Midlands where things are cheap. London is neither small or cheap.

The transport is hideous (I would class a "short" journey as one that takes under an hour) and everything is big and overwhelming. I miss the countryside, the green, the easy pace of life. I miss knowing the names of people on my street.

But, having said all that, it is God's own city.

I nearly took a job in Sydney, but just couldn't move that far away from my family. Off to New Zealand next year though, and think I'll try and do Oz at the same time.

The only places I want to go are countries like Denmark and Iceland. Preferably places I can get to by train or boat.
But they're probably no good for sun.

France is good place to look at art and castles and stuff like that. Not sure about the sun though.

Not a fan of planes, Zooo?

I would love to go to Iceland, I hear it is absolutely gorgeous.

But we really need a rest, and I fear Iceland would be a walking holiday.

My mum suggested an 18-30 holiday on the basis that I am almost out of the qualifying age range.

I can't think of anything worse than being chatted up by some teenager whilst downing flavoured vodka on a banana boat in Malia.
