Buffy, Dollhouse, Alias, Nikita, Haywire, Salt, the Underworld, Alien and Resident Evil franchises - there's been a fair few actiony TV and films with female leads. Not as many as men, no, but far more than with ethnic minorities or gay characters in the lead.

I'd prefer they kept it under wraps until we saw Matt smith regenerate into him. Although I suppose that would be virtually impossible to keep secret in this day and age.
