An ageing earl and his faithful butler, Bembridge, return home to England having spent the last decade away as Governor for a group of tropical islands in the South Seas. They arrive somewhat more relaxed in attitude than when they left, and find a society that has gone in the diametrically opposite direction during their absence.

Beginning to unpack some of the earl's belongings from their transportation crates, the pair are shocked to discover a very much living specimen amongst his hunting trophies: Lapis, daughter of one of the tribal kings, who has fallen in love with Bembridge!

Initially attempting to keep her presence secret, it is naturally only a matter of hours before other members of the house - cook Mrs. Thimble; kitchen maid Maudie; the earl's sister, Lady Mary; and his two now-adult grandchildren, Gerald and Elaine - find out about her presence.

Whilst Lady Mary, Thimble, Maudie and Gerald are shocked and appalled by Lapis's "native" nature, and Bembridge tries to convince her to go back home, his lordship is equally amused and delighted to be hosting such a spirited royal guest. He begins to invite friends to dinner in order to meet her, but during the first evening party it becomes apparent that Lapis's sudden disappearance has been met with a less than positive response back home!
