A new British comedy film about the world of ballroom dancing is in development.

The Light Fantastic is due to film in Blackpool, the world home of the sport, early next year, according to reports.

Inspired by a true story, the film will follow Jason, a thirty-something gay firefighter who dreams of becoming a professional ballroom dancer.

Rupert Everett will star as Jason's "ultra-traditional" dancing instructor, whilst Jeremy Irvine (Atticus Hoye in The Bad Education Movie) will play the fireman.

Co-starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits) and Strictly Come Dancing star Layton Williams, it will feature choreography from TV personality, dancer, talent show judge and choreographer Shirley Ballas and her son Mark, who holds a similar list of professional achievements and talents in the US.

The producers explain: "Set in the vibrant heart of Blackpool, ballroom dancing capital of the world, Jason battles the rigid traditions of ballroom under the close watch of his ultra-traditional instructor Reynolds. While embarking on a journey of self-discovery he is learning to listen to his heart before he can truly dance to its rhythm."

Produced by Genesius Pictures, it is written by Lee Warburton and directed Chris Cottam.
