British comedy Nudinits is first all-knitted animation
Nudinits, a 22 minute animated comedy about a typical English village, but one in which the residents don't wear clothes, has been published online.
The short film is notable because it is the world's first comedy in which all the characters and props have been knitted. Given its complexity, the stop-motion animation has taken two full years to create.
The project is the brainchild of writer and designer Sarah Simi. She explains: "I came up with the idea of an entirely knitted world and thought it would make a great animation. So I collaborated with animator Ed Hartwell and together we have produced a short film."
Simi confirms: "It is indeed entirely hand knitted, everything you see was designed from scratch and knitted by hand. I made the puppets and scenery and professional knitter, Caroline Bletsis, created all the props and animals. It's taken about two years to complete, both stop frame animation and hand knitting not being the quickest processes in the world!"
Sub-titled Tickled Pink, the Nudinits film focuses on Woolly Bush, a cosy corner of England where 'there are a couple of things the villagers are far too polite to mention'.
Sarah Simi says she hopes that they can make more features around the characters using the same animation style. "We want to build up the brand of nudinits as well as seeking investment or commissioning to produce further episodes."
The film can be viewed in full here. The first scene is silent.
