Last Christmas is the perfect Brexit festive movie

Thank you, Last Christmas, for showing us who we are, and for allowing us to laugh at ourselves. Whether you meant to or not.

Hadley Freeman, The Guardian, 7th December 2019

Emilia Clarke interview

As she stars in this year's Christmas feelgood movie, Emilia Clarke talks about the intense scrutiny of Game of Thrones, how she coped with the brain haemorrhage that almost killed her - and why we all need to escape reality sometimes.

Why is the terrible Last Christmas box office gold?

Written by Emma Thompson, directed by Paul Feig of Bridesmaids, soundtracked by George Michael - and panned by critics. Why are audiences flocking to see it?

Dylan B Jones, The Guardian, 21st November 2019

Last Christmas: review

There were fine performances from Henry Golding and Emma Thompson (co-writer) as Kate's Yugoslavian mother. She delivered some of the best lines and was a wonderful breath of fresh air and vibrancy to the film. A disappointment and a big one at that was the relationship between Kate and Tom.

Last Christmas: hearts, history and Heal the Pain

Does the trailer reveal too much? Did anyone bother to check the dates of the Yugoslav wars? And can a George Michael vehicle really be as sexless as a stollen? Warning: this article contains spoilers.

Last Christmas review - cliched festive failure

It seems fitting at this point to use one of the hoariest of film criticism cliches and say that this was a film that lingered long after I left the cinema. In this case, it lingered in the form of a tension headache caused by 103 minutes of mortified wincing.

Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson on Last Christmas

One thing we definitely aren't going to do in this article is give away any spoilers about Last Christmas. Apart from anything else, we're quite scared of Dame Emma Thompson.

Our love-hate relationship with Xmas movie schmaltz

Cheesy, sentimental and ridiculous: festive films' creators and stars including Joanna Page and Kristin Davis explain their enduring appeal.

Last Christmas review

The attempt here is to make a contemporary rom-com, in the style of the beloved British hits Love Actually and Notting Hill but with the stars of today. As it turns out, Clarke has more chemistry with CGI dragons than Golding, who himself acts like he's only occupying time in London before the flight to Singapore to shoot the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians (a much worthier modern rom-com).
