Jenny Partridge and her father are employed at the local mill in Lancashire - until they're both made redundant within days!

Fortune may offer an inkling of respite, however, as Aunt Hetty - Jenny's late mother's sister - has just taken ownership of a boarding house, The Haven, in the seaside resort of Douglas on the Isle of Man. Such a holiday hotspot is sure to provide ample opportunities for employment, they can stay at the house, and the tourist hotspot's need for a wide array of entertainers will offer Jenny the chance to realise her dream of following her mother's footsteps onto the stage.

Arriving on the island, The Haven proves easy enough to find, but Aunt Hetty is even more stern and puritanical than Dad had remembered! She immediately sets them both to work to earn their keep, and forbids her niece from going out in the evenings, lest she discover some form or other of 'immorality'!

Shut inside and not even permitted to take a simple walk, Jenny soon finds a way of pretending she's gone to sleep before sneaking out. On her very first night, she meets a young Canadian song-writer, Tom, attempting to sell his compositions with little success. Taking a shine to one particular song about falling in love, she begins singing along to his piano playing and the pair soon attract not just a crowd, but a fair bit of business for the international traveller.

Jenny, however, is still restless for her chance at greater stardom, and when passing a nearby theatre she discovers it runs a twice-weekly talent contest. She is naturally determined to enter, and firm in her belief she - and Tom - can win; but it soon transpires that he will take a little more convincing!
