Sisters Gert and Daisy live together in a typical working-class terraced street not far from London's bustling docks. Upbeat and cheery, they are constant conflict with their nosey, tedious next-door neighbour Mrs Butler - and after volunteering to help with vegetables at a new British Restaurant, are alarmed to find she has been appointed its head cook!
The duo are soon helping the war effort in any way they can: collecting scrap metal, paper for recycling, and assisting some local children with their own collections.
Meanwhile, local businessman Mr. Perry has less honest intentions as he attempts to secure a consignment of 'damaged' tinned peaches from the docks at a bargain price before selling them at profit on the black market.
