Carry On Spying trivia

Charles Hawtrey's character was originally to be called James Bind - 001½. After the threat of legal action from the newly established Bond franchise (the first James Bond movie had been released just 2 years previously), producer Peter Rogers changed the character to Charlie Bind, Oh Oh Ooh!

Director Gerald Thomas accidentally cut his hand on the false sugar-glass used in one scene - whilst demonstrating to Kenneth Williams that it was perfectly safe to put his hand through the modified glass-panelled door!

Early Carry On script-writer Norman Hudis penned two initial drafts for Carry On Spying before handing the project over to Talbot Rothwell, who brought long-term collaborator Sid Colin on board. One followed a band of eager fresh recruits, whilst the other was much more in line with contemporary movements such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Carry On Spying took 6 weeks and cost just £142,666 to produce, including wages of £5,000 each for Kenneth Williams and Bernard Cribbins, and £4,000 for Barbara Windsor in her Carry On debut.
