Loosely based on a true story, Paul Kaye plays Cliff Starkey, a bowls player whose presence on the sacred greens of Torquay doesn't see him welcomed with open arms: Cliff has punk hair, wears scruffy clothes and carries his bowls in a carrier bag. But he's brilliant at his chosen sport and soon acquires an American agent who propels his protégé into the big time. But fame has its price - along the way Starkey risks losing both his best mate Trev and girlfriend Kerry.
