Binge-worthy British comedy series you should not miss
Online streaming is now the norm, and that 'free' and easy access to content (i.e. no need to buy a DVD box set, just press 'play') has resulted in people consuming more archive British comedy shows than before.
Various online streaming platforms offer all kinds of TV shows, and many have a good selection of British sitcoms and comedy dramas to enjoy.
With the covid-19 pandemic forcing people to stay at home, online binge-watching became everyone's go-to pastime. Here's four British comedy shows which have picked up new viewers over the last year, and seen people revisiting them for a comfort-based re-watch too.
Sex Education (2019 - Present)
One of the most popular series today, Sex Education, is a modern comedy drama. It revolves around the sex introduction and education of a socially-awkward teenage boy named Otis. Along for the ride are his fellow classmates. With a sex therapist as a mother, Otis used his insider's knowledge (and his mum's notes) to become a sort-of expert who could offer sex advice to his classmates.
Otis's journey comes with his discovery, exploration, and analysis of the youth's sexual behaviour and sexuality. Now three series in, and with a fourth on the way, the show dwells on a wide range of topics and issues. These include teenage pregnancy, the LGBTQ, sexual assault, trauma, and of course, sex.
Friday Night Dinner (2011 - 2020)
Friday Night Dinner is famous for its charming characters and unending slapstick pranks. It centres on the lives of brothers Adam and Jonny Goodman.
This family sitcom tells the story of The Goodmans as they meet up each week. They're a Jewish family that enjoys weekly Friday night gatherings. And, somehow, these always end up in chaos.
Fall in love with the cast's unique quirkiness and humour in this series. Be one of the millions who watch this six-series long show.
Mr. Bean (1990 - 1995)
There is no one more iconic than Rowan Atkinson's Mr Bean when it comes to British comedy. Despite the lack of dialogue, Atkinson's portrayal of the child-like Bean created a light-hearted show filled with often harmless antics.
Although there is really not much story in the series, Mr Bean's mischievousness and perseverance caught the attention of people worldwide. If you can't get enough of the show, check out Bean: The Movie and Mr Bean's Holiday as well - they're available on streaming platforms too.
The Office (2001 - 2003)
The original British version of The Office may not have run for as long as the American version, but it is the show which defined a whole generation of new comedies. Also, with its more British-sensibilities, it arguably gives viewers in this country the bigger laughs than the bigger American show.
Watch again as the series depicts and narrates the daily struggles and mundane life of the workers of Wernham Hogg paper merchants. Even though it has only 14 episodes itself, The Office has spawned 100s more - it's now been adapted in 8 countries. The American version (200+ episodes) was the most-streamed show in 2020.
So, yes, watching your favourite British comedy movies and TV shows are only a couple of clicks away with online streaming platforms. So, get your snacks and drinks ready. Snuggle with your fluffiest blanket. Then, settle down and binge-watch these amazing British comedy shows.
