Trained in Stage Management at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1971. On graduating Roy cut his teeth in Repertory Theatre at Hornchurch, before moving into London's West End to stage manage some of the biggest musicals in town at the time, including "Billy" at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane with Michael Crawford; "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Palace and the original London production of "Chicago" at the Cambridge.

In 1979 he left the theatre and joined the BBC as a Third Assistant Director working on various Drama and Comedy productions as well as "Blue Peter"! He moved through the ranks quickly, joining David Crofts' ( "Dad's Army"; "Hi de Hi" etc. ) office as an 2nd Assistant Director. He soon became David's 1st Asst, then his Director. During this time he also worked on "Victoria Wood - As seen on TV", "French & Saunders" and "Rory Bremner" amongst others..

Leaving the BBC as a Producer/Director in 1993, he was asked to become the Comedy Consultant for Yorkshire Television (YTV) which he did, as well as directing two Situation Comedy pilots for them. In 1997 he joined forces with his agent Tim Hancock to form Water Lane Productions and negotiated a four project deal with YTV. This resulted in the award winning series of "The Booze Cruise" films with Martin Clunes and Neil Pearson, the first of which was the highest rated drama on UK television for nearly two years. He was also the Executive Producer on the Australian Sit Com "Mother & Son" in Sweden and Denmark for GrundyTelevision.

Along with his mainstream career, he has also Produced, Directed and Written corporate films and videos for major clients such as the Ford Motor Company, First Group and Glaxo Smithkiline as well as "Vanity" projects for the rich and famous.

Roy also runs short courses in Comedy writing at Hampton Court Studios and an Email/Internet Comedy writing course.
