Rachel Fairburn: Showgirl review

A fine example of using stinging humour to make a strong social point.

Dawn French reveals recreating Vicar Of Dibley puddle plunge left her in agony for years

In 2009, the producers of Paul O'Grady's chat show asked her to stand in for him and recreate the moment to end the programme. Describing the idea as 'catastrophically misguided', she added: "They constructed a 10ft-high hill out of scaffolding covered in AstroTurf. The idea was that there was a long enough drop for me to disappear into. Then some bright spark had the idea of having a shallow silicon membrane containing two inches of water on top so that, as I jumped through, the water would splash up and look like a deep puddle. But what was I falling onto? The answer is absolutely nothing."

Rachel Fairburn

Rachel Fairburn: Showgirl review

Rachel Fairburn: Showgirl is a fun piece of theatre which ticks all the stand-up comedy boxes, but the show's impact is limited by cohesion and commitment issues.

Geoff Norcott

Geoff Norcott at Leicester Square Theatre review

The punchlines flow fastest when he talks about grappling with middle age. He is trying hard not be become an angry stereotype, but finds himself fuming at the price of puppies, the trend for designer mattresses and the way French people speak French.
