Comedy review: Ross Noble - Tangentleman, Edinburgh

For such a seasoned comic, so comfortable riffing off the top of his head, the suggestion that Ross Noble needed a few shows under his belt before allowing reviewers in for press night this evening boggles the mind.

Rhod Gilbert on becoming the new host

It feels like we've had guest hosts on Never Mind the Buzzcocks forever, but that's about to change. Yup, we have a new - permanent - host, and it's none other than comedian Rhod Gilbert.

Catriona Wightman, Digital Spy, 29th September 2014

Radio Times review

At last, Buzzcocks has a permanent host. For too long we've been adrift on a choppy sea of guest hosts where for every swell like Terry Wogan or Adam Buxton who could make the show their own, there have been troughs of forgettable faces.

One of the more memorable is voluble Welsh comic Rhod Gilbert, who finally takes on the mantle of hosting duties left by Mark Lamarr and Simon Amstell. He's not as acerbic or waspish as either of those two, so expect more surreal anarchy than vicious putdowns. Guests Professor Green, Roisin Conaty, Gabby Logan and the 1975's Matt Healy will do their best to keep up.

David Crawford, Radio Times, 29th September 2014

Radio Times review

In the toga-clad comedy about three hormonal lads in ancient Rome, Grumio is recycling the rubbish. Yes, they had confusing bin systems in Rome, too, and just as the lazy slave gives up trying to understand it, he spots an abandoned baby tucked away behind the bins - and decides to raise it as his own.

Stylax, naturally, sees the new arrival as an opportunity to strike up a relationship with an attractive wet nurse. Meanwhile, Marcus is trying to avoid seeing Cynthia's arty one-woman play.

Ben Dowell, Radio Times, 29th September 2014

Scottish Comedian of the Year 2014 review

Musical comic Harry Garrison was the standout crowd favourite, but under a system that incorporated both audience voting and the will of a panel of judges, with opaque respective weighting, justice was done and the title went to Bruce Fummey.

Review: Dawn French's Thirty Million Minutes

To call this stand-up would be misleading. To be sure, Dawn French is as funny as ever.

TV Review: Frankie Boyle's Referendum Autopsy

Frankie Boyle certainly has a pretty good idea of what people think of him: "There are many people who consider me a cunt." I'd love to see a vote on that to see if this programme changes people's opinions at all. Somehow I doubt it.

Book review: Only When I Laugh by Paul Merton

The trouble with autobiographies of stand-up comedians is that if you are a big enough fan to shell out for them you are probably going to be familiar with many of the stories in them. This is the case with Paul Merton's eagerly anticipated story. I've followed him from the start, interviewed him a few times and felt a keen sense of deja vu while reading his book.

Changes to UK law come into force this week allowing people to use copyright material from films, TV shows and songs in order to parody them.
