Last Tango In Halifax loses its rhythm

While Last Tango In Halifax is still beautifully acted, with moments of sharp truth, there were moments on its return when it was dancing too fast for its own good.

Opinion: Tunnel visions

Thanks to Nick Revell pointing them out on Twitter, I've been enjoying wading through some lovely old comedy pictures from the mid-1980s taken by Bill Alford. It is appropriate that they come from Malcolm Hardee's Tunnel Club because to me they feel like an episode of Time Tunnel.

Review: Stewart Lee, Much A-Stew About Nothing

It would, of course, be delusional to conclude he'd taken on board what I said but I found it interesting that he had moved the most audience-testing section to the end of the evening and didn't refer to the crowd using four-letter words.

Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph, 20th November 2013

TV preview: Backchat, BBC3

It all works very nicely and while it will do Jack Whitehall's career no harm whatsoever it will also probably work wonders for his father, much in the same way that Harry Enfield's father Edward build up quite a head of steam out of being an irascible old arse when Harry Enfield made it big.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 20th November 2013

Review: Eric and Little Ern

It's hard not to warm to the sweet silliness of Ian Ashpitel and Jonty Stephens's tribute to Morecambe and Wise.

All-conquering comedian Jack Whitehall doesn't really need to bond further with his dad, Michael. As fathers and sons go, they're cool, as in warm.

Alan Franks, Radio Times, 20th November 2013

Him & Her preview

I've said it before, but it's worth saying again, Him & Her is one of the best (and most under-rated) sitcoms of recent times.

How Jack Whitehall saved Never Mind The Buzzcocks

It's fair to say that Jack Whitehall is having a moment. As well as Fresh Meat, Bad Education and his new Backchat series co-hosted with his dad, Jack Whitehall was the latest host on Never Mind the Buzzcocks on Monday. And a fine job he did, too.

Charlotte Gunnell, Metro, 20th November 2013

Gina McKee interview

Jane Graham, The Big Issue, 20th November 2013

Radio Times review

The thinness of the series' premise is exposed in this week's two stories. It's always a delight listening to Rebecca Front and Kevin Eldon weaving their magic in the reader's chair, but their tales aren't particularly inspiring. Toby Davies's story of what happens when a writer of erotic thrillers finds a lost Shakespearean manuscript in his attic feels forced, while Eldon's parable about gratitude plays like a menacing Mr Men and is graced by a performance by The Thick of It's Alex Macqueen - the very personification of Mr Uppity.
