It is 1927 and life continues with a distinctly Victorian air in the London residence of wealthy businessman and widower Lord George Meldrum.
Whilst Meldrum and his family - his brother Teddy, daugthers Cissy and Poppy, and his mother-in-law, Lady Lavender - live a life of luxury above stairs, their staff work below them.
The staff are headed by butler Alf, whose constant schemes to cheat the Meldrums are often foiled by his own daughter, Ivy's, dimwittedness, and footman James Twelvetrees. There's also kindly cook Mrs Lipton, too-wise-for-his-own-good bootboy Henry, and charlady Mabel Wheeler.
