Wallace, perhaps the world's most absent-minded inventor, and his canine companion Gromit, have started running their own bakery, Top Bun, in their house at 62 West Wallaby Street, Wigan.

However, Gromit soon becomes worried when he reads reports in the local newspaper saying that several local bakers have disappeared during the year in strange circumstances, all caused by a dangerous Cereal Killer. Wallace is not worried, mainly due to the fact he is in love with bread enthusiast Piella Bakewell, former star of the "Bake-O-Lite" bread adverts. Gromit is therefore left running the business on his own, when he would rather get to better know Piella's poodle Fluffles.

While Wallace might be the 'toast of the town' at the moment, Gromit makes a shocking discovery and realises that his master is in danger, and so goes forth to solve the case before Wallace ends up brown bread.
